The SAE Mini - Baja is an undergraduate design competition. The goal is to design and build a prototype off-road vehicle with a mass-production cost of less than $2500.00. The vehicle must be designed around an 8hp Briggs & Stratton engine. There are three regional competitions: East, Mid-West and West.
This year LSU will be competing in the West and Midwest Competitions which will be hosted by the University of Texas-El Paso and the University of Wisconsin, respectivel y. Each of the two competitions will take place in the spring of 1998 with each placing emphasis on design and endurance.
In 1994 and 1995 the LSU Teams had very strong showings until the three-hour endurance competition. The 1994 Team broke a universal-joint early in the endurance event. The 1995 Team's suspension failed after only one lap. Although the 1994 and 1995 Teams were able to repair the vehicle and continue, these failures resulted in overall placings of 11th in 1994 and 13th in 1995. The 1996 LSU Team did extremely well, placing 3rd overall in the East Competition and 12th overall in the Midwest. The 1997 Team collided with an obstacle during the endurance race and broke an A-Arm. This repair cost them valuable time which also resulted in a lower overall placing. We anticipate success similar to that experienced by the 1996 Team.
