My Composite System
Choose an application where composites can be used and
describe the component(s) that will make use of the composite materials.
Choose the type of composites to be used.
Choose the specific type of fiber and matrix system and
explain why, by describing the properties of your composite system and
how they are appropriate for the particular application of your choice.
What will be the density of your composite material?
How do you calculate that?
What kind of fabrication process will you use to fabricate
your components? Describe the fabrication process.
What will be the advantages of using your composite system
instead of using alternative materials, such as metals.
You may include figures.

Design Question:
Pick a structure with practical and real life application.
This can be a shelf, weight rack, wall, bridge, airplane wing and
so on. The structure has to have a level of design difficulty at
least as much as a chair with four legs and a back support.
First calculate the stresses that exist in the original
structure during a normal loading.
Due : May 7
Design Question:
Then, design the whole structure with composite materials.
Include comparison of the original design and material choice with yours
in stress/strain calculation, weight consideration (increase or decrease),
practicality(roughness, conductivity, moisture absorption, other factors),
cost analysis, and other factors that you deem important. You must
address all issues that may cause your new structure to fail prematurely,
such as stress concentration.
You also need to address possible manufacturing methods
for your designed structure. Include figure and follow the design
steps.
Every step has to be explained completely.
Points are given based on the difficulty of the original
design, appropriate choice of material, and calculations and analysis.
Limit: 5 pages.
